Are you interested in both art and animals? Then come along to the Hemsley Conservation Centre and use its inspiring inhabitants to develop your drawing skills!

The course will provide a brief introduction to the basics of zoological anatomy and illustration, as well as tips on drawing an animated (and usually unpredictable!) subject. You will have the opportunity to explore the site and draw your favourite animals from life.

A keeper will be on hand to advise on animal behaviour so that you can maximise your chances of making detailed and informed sketches, and you will have the opportunity to see, draw and get to know a range of rare and fascinating creatures.


The course begins at 1pm.

Included in your ticket is access to the zoo for thee whole day from 10am-5pm.

All levels welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, subject to general admission. Please bring a sketchbook, sharpener and pencils with you.


About the Tutor: Kristiina Sandoe


Kristiina Sandoe has an MA in Fine Art, a BA (hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Printmaking and Illustration, and a Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning. She worked as an archaeological illustrator from 1989 until 2000, and now teaches painting, drawing, printmaking, and archaeological, botanical and zoological illustration, as well as creating her own artwork.
